Seasonal Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Desserts

With Valentine’s Day coming up, it was time to give my homemade Reese’s Cups a festive upgrade! I love tailoring my treats to the season—so for Easter, I made them as cute little eggs; for Christmas, they turned into tiny Christmas trees; and for Valentine’s Day, of course, hearts are the way to go.

There’s nothing more on-theme than heart-shaped treats for Valentine’s—whether it’s candy, cookies, or little desserts, hearts just scream love.

Over the last few years, I’ve shared several heart-shaped goodies like Ding Dong Valentine’s Hearts, Oreo Truffles Valentine’s Hearts, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Valentine’s Hearts.

Storage Tips

To keep these chocolate peanut butter hearts fresh, store them in an airtight container in the fridge. They’ll stay tasty for up to two weeks. If you want to keep them even longer, freezing is a great option—just thaw them briefly at room temperature before enjoying.

Make-Ahead Tips

These Valentine’s hearts are perfect for making in advance. You can prepare the peanut butter layer a few days ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. Then cut and dip them the day you plan to serve or gift them. This way, your Valentine’s treat comes together quickly without last-minute stress.

Variations

Feeling adventurous? Try swapping creamy peanut butter for crunchy peanut butter for a little extra texture. You can also mix in a pinch of cinnamon or a splash of espresso powder to the peanut butter filling for a unique twist. For a nut-free version, sunflower seed butter works wonderfully too. And if you like your chocolate a bit salty, sprinkle some sea salt flakes on top right after dipping.

Serving Suggestions

These hearts make a sweet little dessert on their own, but they also shine plated alongside fresh berries or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Pack them up in cute boxes for thoughtful Valentine’s Day gifts or serve them up at your next family gathering—you’ll get all the compliments, guaranteed!

Recipe FAQs

  • Can I use natural peanut butter? Yes! Just make sure it’s well-stirred and room temperature for easy mixing.
  • Do I have to use parchment paper? It really helps with removing the peanut butter layer and keeps cleanup easy, but you can grease the pan if needed.
  • What if I don’t have a heart-shaped cutter? No worries! Use a small round or square cutter, or simply cut into little squares for bite-sized treats.
  • Can I make these without a freezer? The freezer helps firm the mixture quickly, but you can also chill in the fridge—it just takes longer.
  • How do I store leftovers? Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer to maintain freshness.

Adorable and delicious chocolate peanut butter hearts perfect for Valentine’s Day. These melt-in-your-mouth treats combine creamy peanut butter with sweet chocolate coating, making a great homemade gift or dessert.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: Approximately 30 hearts (depends on cookie cutter size) 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1012 oz. chocolate, chopped (mix of semi-sweet and milk chocolate recommended) or good quality candy coating

Instructions

  1. Line an 8 x 8 inch dish with parchment paper, letting it hang over the edges.
  2. In a mixing bowl, stir together peanut butter, melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and salt until sugar dissolves.
  3. Gradually mix in powdered sugar until fully combined.
  4. Press mixture firmly into prepared dish until about 1/2 inch thick, smoothing the top.
  5. Freeze until firm enough to cut, about 30-45 minutes.
  6. Line a tray with parchment paper for the cut hearts.
  7. Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter (~1.5 inches) to cut hearts and place on the tray.
  8. Gather scraps, knead gently, press, and cut out as many more hearts as possible.
  9. Return the cut hearts to the freezer to firm up again.
  10. Melt chocolate or candy coating gently using double boiler or microwave in short bursts.
  11. Dip each chilled heart into the melted chocolate, coating completely, gently tap off excess chocolate, and place on parchment-lined tray.
  12. Chill in fridge until chocolate sets completely.
  13. Store finished hearts in the fridge or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

The number of hearts depends on cookie cutter size; with a 1.5 inch cutter, about 30 hearts can be made from this batch., Due to peanut butter hearts softening quickly, dip only a few at a time to keep shape.
